Emergencies

Draft document: Emergencies

Commenting on behalf of the organisation

Whilst broadly supporting the principles set out in this document we feel there should be greater recognition of the full range of protective actions and the rationale for these. In particular, there are Codex international guidelines and European Community legislation that pre-define intervention levels for radionuclides in food in a post-accident situation. As these intervention levels are statutory there is little scope for optimisation of these alongside other protective measures. Although the document makes reference to food restrictions and that these are often largely independent of other measures (para 89) and can therefore be optimised seperately the document does also states that intervention levels for these should be applied flexibly. We would like the document to make clearer reference to those protective measures that are predetermined by international guidelines or legislation.
